Minnesota's Second Annual World Affairs Challenge

On March 6, 2010, global education non-profit World Savvy will host Minnesota's Second Annual World Affairs Challenge in partnership with Macalester College's Institute for Global Citizenship.

WHO: Over 400 students, volunteer judges, educational leaders, and community guests are expected to take part. Students from twenty middle and high schools around the Twin Cities will participate in this event.

WHAT: The World Affairs Challenge is an academic competition focused on this year's central theme: Water around the World. During the spring, students work in teams to prepare a comprehensive presentation and showcase of proposed solutions on issues related to the political, economic, environmental and social impacts of water use and management. Students also study current affairs and world geography in preparation for a global knowledge quiz, and practice their teamwork skills for a group problem-solving activity in which students are grouped with youth from other schools to solve a real-world scenario. On the day of the World Affairs Challenge these four activities - the presentation, the showcase, the quiz, and the real-world problem - provide youth the opportunity to present their findings and opinions as well as to be listened to and respected by their peers and adults who serve as observers and judges.

WHEN: Saturday, March 6 - 9am-4:30pm

WHERE: Macalester College (opening and closing ceremonies take place in the Kagin Ballroom)

WHY: Many of today´s most pressing issues - protecting the environment, addressing health crises like H1N1, halting terrorism and responding to worldwide economic crisis - are global in scope and can only be effectively addressed with international cooperation. To succeed personally and professionally in this global context, students must be equipped with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes for global citizenship. The World Affairs Challenge helps students develop the global awareness and skills necessary to effectively problem solve on a global level.
